Toby's story Toby was found by some school children trapped in a dry swimming pool. The children went and told there school teacher that they had found this dog in a swimming pool and they thought it might be dead .At break time the teacher who also volunteers at A.R.C.A went to try and find the dog. What she saw when she found him was one of the worst cases of cruelty, neglect and abuse that A.R.C.A have ever seen. She called for back up immediately so that a video and photographs could be taken so that when the owner is found evidence could be put together for prosecution case. On approaching the dog it became apparent that he was still alive but all the dog could manage to do was bite at them . It became obvious later that he was just trying to protect himself from more physical abuse. He couldn't sit up or stand as he was so weak, every time he tried to sit up he just fell over onto his side. Blankets were quickly thrown over him so they could avoid his teeth and he was transported immediately to QUATRO CAMINS VETERINARYCENTRE where he was put straight on a drip. Toby was severely dehydrated and had been starved for many weeks. Toby had a big nasty festering wound on his shoulder and had numerous other scars all over his body and. Carlos the vet said that he didn't think the dog would last the next 2 hours. He did survive and 4 days later A.C.A.R phoned me and asked if i could pick him up from the vets as he needed specialist one on one care and they didn't think he would survive rescue center life. I don't think i have ever seen a dog so skinny as the one i picked up from the vets that day. He still wouldn't allow people near him without biting so had to be muzzled to get him out of his cage. I weighed him before we left for home and he was only 7kg. He still couldn't stand up or walk but could sit up for a very short time without falling over. Every time i went near him he would pee himself through fear .Gradually he became stronger and was able to stand. I watched in amazement as day after day my 2 boxers would stand behind him and keep nudging him to try to get him to his feet. Once they managed this they would do the same thing to get him to move a few steps, and then they started to play very gently around him trying to get him to join in. They seemed to know exactly what stage he was at and treat him accordingly. They were never rough or intimidating to him. I think they played the biggest part in getting Toby mobile again. It was a great pleasure watch and about 2 weeks after him arriving i got to see him trot about 3 strides with my boxers. It took a lot of hard work and patience to win his trust, and to this day he will only let my closest family near him, if i try to take him to people he will still pee himself through fear. He has to go to people himself and even then he will only go near them if they completely ignore him Today Toby weighs 18kg, active , obedient and house trained. I think toby will be spending the rest of his life with me, but if you think you can offer him a home with all the love and expertise he requires i would be very great full as i could then take in another dog from A.R.C.A that needs the specialist care and training i can offer.
