Training

On this page of our site we give you a brief description of what and how we train our dogs. All the dogs that we train are trained to a very high standard so that they can perform there duties as top class personal protection dog and also a loving and loyal family pet. We make sure that all the training we do with the dogs is fun for them to do with plenty of rewards such as praise, food or a toys.

Poison proofing

These days it can be necessary to train your dog to refuse food and to ignore any food or bones found on your property because of the risk that it may have been left by somebody trying to poison your dog. K9 protection dog training can train or help you to train your own dog to refuse food on your property. We prefer to take on this type of training ourselves, but if an owner feels that they are able to do this themselves we more than happy to assist them. The training takes a lot of hard work and dedication on your behalf so please don't start the training if you think you might not be able to continue it as one mistake can ruin weeks of training.

Obedience and Behavior

We like to do this training at the dogs own house as quite often when dogs come and stay with us they don't exhibit the same problems as they do at home. Also we want to show the owners how to train their own dog. Its no good us training the dog and then the owners not knowing how to use the training or to further the dogs education. We like to train dogs using dog psychology and training as a mixture, but it really depends on the dog and the problems.

Residential course 1 - Basic obedience course

This course is for dogs that are just starting their training. We often use this along side sorting out specific behavior problems. This course includes sit, down, stay, come whilst on a leash and also dogs will learn to walk correctly on a leash with and without other dogs around. This is a 2 week course and at the end of the course you will be shown how to continue with your dogs education. At anytime during the training process you are welcome to come and see your dogs progress and to take part in some basic training training for you and the dog.

Residential course 2 - Advanced obedience course

On this course the dogs will continue with there training but will have distractions added and we start working with the dogs of the leash. By the end of this course your dogs will be obedient on and off the leash giving you more freedom to go where you like knowing your dog will always behave. We will also include any personal commands that wish your dog to learn on or off the leash.

Group sessions

Group sessions are held weekly at the academy or if you live to far away from the academy you could organize a group and we would be happy to come to you. These courses are for basic training only and we have the owners participate the entire time so they are able to continue with the training in there own time.

Rehabilitation

As we all know many dogs these day are miss treated or abandoned by there owners and end up living on the streets or in a rescue center. We believe at K9 academy that all dogs deserve a second chance in life and offer various courses to rehabilitate or retrain rescued dogs.

Marker training

Marker training is an effective, fun and easy way of training your dog. A marker is used to tell your dog exactly when they did a desirable behavior and is then given a reward. The target is to get the dog to do a certain task which can be sit, down, stay, come, stand, go to a certain spot in the room etc. The marker is a word such as "YES" or the use of a clicker. The reward can be food, play or praise.

We also have an agility course which is open to the public to use for a small fee. Dogs love agility and we think that the owners enjoy just as much. Why not give it a try?

If your dog requires training that is not listed on this page then do not hesitate to contact us on the email address or telephone below. We ask that any none english speaking dog owners to email us first.
